We the People: Project Citizen:
These 1-day workshops are designed for educators interested in involving their students in a service-learning project using the Project Citizen model. Project Citizen is a structured program that helps students become responsible and involved citizens. Through the program, students identify and research a public policy issue in their community, develop their own solution, and create and implement an action plan.

I want to express how much the KIDS Consortium model has influenced my teaching. I attended a four-day Institute facilitated by Education Consultants at KIDS. They not only taught the keys to successful service-learning, they modeled effective teaching strategies. Perhaps one of the most important realizations I made is the importance of student-generated ideas and projects; while we as teachers must provide ample opportunities for guided discovery, the students become fully engaged when they are the decision makers.

Recently, my class won the America's Greenest School contest. While this title has given us a remarkable amount of publicity, it is the KIDS Consortium model that empowered my students to believe that their work is truly making a difference. When my students were interviewed for the newspaper or appeared on the news, they were able to speak knowledgeably, confidently, and respectfully because of their service learning project; they did not need to "memorize their lines" because they felt a sense of pride and ownership.

As one of my students said at the end of the Student Summit, "that was the best two days of my life!" It was a wonderful culmination of an exciting, year-long project, and we hope to attend many more summits in the future.

Attending the KIDS Consortium Institute was truly a turning point in my teaching career; I taught my students all of the same school skills this year, yet this project gave us a bigger goal that extended beyond the classroom.
