Project Citizen Annual State Showcase

The Showcase Day at the Maine State House is a wonderful opportunity for students to share their portfolios (a 4 panel display and binder) with teams from other schools and panels of distinguished policy-makers and citizens. The day consists of oral hearings, lunch, and a ceremony in the Hall of Flags.

Through the oral hearing process, students have an opportunity to practice valuable presentation skills in legislative hearing rooms. Students present and defend their project to a panel of distinguished policy-makers and citizens. Panelists ask questions and offer concise feedback. The students are asked to describe:

  1. The problem they chose to focus on (can be local, state or federal)
  2. Alternative policies they researched to address the problem
  3. The proposed public policy they think will best address the problem
  4. Their Action Plan for implementing their selected policy
  5. Their Reflections about the Project Citizen learning experience
One portfolio (display and binder) is selected to represent Maine at the Annual Project Citizen National Showcase. One team is also selected to receive an Oral Presentation award.

Thanks again for the opportunity to participate in the Project Citizen Showcase. The students' work seems to improve each year. I've noticed that the young people have an increasingly better grasp of the meaning of public policy and how to influence it. KIDS Consortium continues to make a big difference in many lives by sponsoring wonderful programs and encouraging participation.
